Till-Holger Borchert & Peter van den Brink
It is exactly five hundred years since Albrecht Dürer completed his legendary tour of the Low Countries (1520−21). The artist kept a detailed notebook, in which his fascinating journey is extensively documented. Not only did he meticulously record all his expenses but also the many gifts he received. Dürer adopted Antwerp as his local base, from which he travelled to other cities including Ghent, Bruges, Brussels, Mechelen, Aachen– where he attended the coronation of Charles V – and Cologne. The Nuremberg master had all sorts of interesting encounters with fellow artists, princes and merchants from Northern and Southern Europe, as well as scholars like Erasmus.
This richly illustrated catalogue includes an intriguing essay by Till-Holger Borchert and short, lucid commentaries on the works that paint a complete picture of Dürer’s famous journey.
The book features over 140 paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures by both Dürer himself and the artists he met along the way. They inspired him and he influenced them in turn. A must-have publication for every Dürer fan.
The exhibition
Dürer war hier. Eine Reise wird Legende runs from 8 July to 24 October 2021 at the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen.
