The original work was painted by Jan Van Eyck in 1433, in oil paint on oak panel. It can be seen in the National Gallery in London.

This portrait is generally considered to be a Jan Van Eyck self-portrait, due to inscriptions on the original frame. Moreover, the concentrated gaze of the man's eyes is typical of artists looking in a mirror while painting their self-portrait. Jan Van Eyck is wearing a red headgear. It is not a turban, as it is usually described, but a Burgundian chaperon with the hanging part draped around Van Eyck's hat. This may have been arranged so that the cloth did not bother the artist while painting?
