The original work was painted by Jan Van Eyck in 1439, in oil paint on oak panel. It can be seen in Antwerp, in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts.

The Virgin stands in front of and on a cloth of honour that is held by two flying angels. In a tender gesture, the Christ Child grabs with his right arm the neck of his mother and cuddles her lovingly. In his left hand, he holds a rosary.
The fountain in front of the Virgin refers to the Fountain of Life. Through its positioning and perspective it lends this little picture a sense of depth. The flora and the fragment of wall behind the Virgin allude to the enclosed garden, symbol of her virginity.
