Original work painted by Jan Van Eyck in 1434 in oil paint on oak panel. It can be seen in London, in the National Gallery.

This Portrait of Giovanni (?) Arnolfini and his wife is without any doubt a masterpiece and a pivotal work in the history of Early Netherlandish painting. The great art historian Erwin Panofsky considered this double portrait to be a painted wedding contract in which each everyday detail contains a symbol that contributes to the meaning of the painting. The man's elevated hand refers to his pronouncing his wedding oath, the single burning candle recals the presence of God during the conclusion of the sacrament of the marriage, the dog stands for fidelity and the broom for chastity. The mirror in the back reflects the witnesses who are entering the room.
