Original work painted by Jan Van Eyck in 1437 in black ink and oil, on oak panel. The work can be seen in Antwerp, in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts.

St Barbara – patron of the architects – is seated on the ground, with the drapery of her dress spread the full width of the picture plane. Behind her (and in contrast to her quiet, concentrated reading), we see a detailed representation of the buzzing activity of a late medieval construction site; Barbara's attribute, her tower, is being built and the workers have finished already two storeys of what will presumably become a much taller edifice.
